Work/Web Design

Change of Pace

I love working on the web. Everything is constantly changing. There’s always something new and interesting. I like that. Freelancing was the same way. One day I would have tons of work to do, the next I’d be looking for more. My schedule was very sporadic. I never knew exactly what I’d be doing the next day. I never knew what suprise would be thrown my way.

When I was given the opportunity to take a full-time job I thought that would be cool. It would be more relaxed and less sporadic. I was excited for the change of pace. And for the 10 days I was there, it was a nice change of pace.

Integrum is awesome. I already told you how cool they are. It was fun working with them. I learned a lot about having a “real” …

Integrum Technologies

About a month ago at the November Refresh meeting Josh Knowles talked to me about a possible job opportunity. I then met with Josh and the rest of the Integrum guys at the November AZ on Rails meeting and started working a week later.

It’s a fun place to work although very different than what I’m used to.

Less Distractions
Working at an office instead of at home I’m less easily distracted. I tend to stay focused on one particular project longer rather than constantly switching back and forth between projects.

No Marketing
I’ve never had a hard time finding work but it’s not like work just comes to me all the time either. Working for a company I no longer have to worry about finding new projects or dealing with clients. I’m glad that I’ve dealt with clients before and …

9 to 5 Part 2

At my new job we have Nerf guns that are used regularly throughout the day. My job title is CSS Samurai. Other job titles include Kung Fu Koder, Alpha Geek, The Professional, Human/Geek Relations, and Design Ninja. In the middle of the office we have a monkey with a cape hanging from the ceiling. After one successful business call beer and cookies were purchased and brought to the office. There are 3 Matt’s and 3 Chris’s so I go by Mattbob. We’re looking to get a Wii for the office. In a couple of weeks we’re having a Christmas party. Hours are really flexible and the projects are gonna be a little cooler.

The didn’t tell me this when they asked if I wanted the job. Needless to say, I’m enjoying it, but it’s gonna take some getting used to. I’ve …

9 to 5

I’ve never had a “real” job. Meaning, I’ve never had a constant paycheck, an office to go to, or a boss. I think I’ve done pretty well on my own. I’ve always worked from home, set my own hours, and spent all day working on projects by myself.

Until now.

I still have a few long-term clients that I really enjoy working with but other then that I’m done with freelancing. I’ve taken my first “real” job. The kind where I leave my house, work as part of a team, and get payed regularly. I’ve only worked there for half a day but I like it already. My only complaint is the 25 minute drive, but it’s not too bad, I’ll get used to it.

I haven’t been working long enough yet to know whether I like it better than working freelance but …

Desert Code Camp

Desert Code Camp was on Saturday and it was the biggest group of web geeks in one place that I’ve ever seen.

At Desert Code Camp anyone can volunteer to present any topic they want (as long as it’s related to code) and then you pick which sessions you want to go to and you show up. It’s free, you can learn some pretty sweet stuff and you get to meet other web developers so it’s pretty cool.

The camp had 8 time slots with 9 different sessions in each slot so you had to pick and choose which 1 of the 9 sessions you wanted to go to for each slot. The sessions were about an hour long and for the most part I was really impressed with the presenters and the wide range of topics. Whenever the next one …
