Don’t Hide

The websites I like the most are the ones that tell you everything about themselves to the point where you feel like you sort of know the people behind it. Personal sites (especially of web designers) are a lot of fun because the owner can do whatever they want with the site and make it truly there own. They can have fun with it and just be themselves without having to worry about being professional or looking goofy. They’re allowed to be goofy.

But my favorite websites are the ones that mix professionalism with honesty and openness. These are usually small companies and they’re great! I stick around longer on those sites and I’m sure there customers do too. A blog is a great tool for the customers to get to know you and for the business owner to get to …

Learning PHP

I’ve been trying to teach myself PHP lately and I’ve had a lot of fun with it. The first thing I tried to make was a form that had 5 fields and could upload files to my server. It took a little while but I was able to figure it out and get it just how I wanted. Before this the only thing I had ever done in PHP was simple edits in WordPress and a contact form so this was slightly more difficult but still pretty basic PHP.

Then I wanted to use a form to enter information to a database and retrieve it later on. This took longer and I couldn’t have done it without some very handy PHP Tutorials but I finally figured it out. The problem with …

What made your site famous?

What brought the visitors to your site? What made them keep coming back? What made your site famous and through your site made you famous?

Was it the content you wrote? Was it your rockin design? Was it the members and community that got involved? Was it even you that made your site famous?

Would your site be as popular if the quality of the content dropped? Would it matter if you couldn’t design? Would anyone care about your site if cool and influential people hadn’t come to help you?

If it’s the content that made you famous, keep writing quality content. If it’s your design, keep designing. And if it’s others who made you famous, make them famous. The reward will be even greater then if you’d taken all the fame for yourself.

If you’re wondering if this is about Random Shapes it …

SitePoint

Earlier today I shared a list of articles that I’ve found to be very helpful. But one of the most helpful sites I’ve ever come across is SitePoint. It has a ton of excellent articles, blogs, and forums covering every aspect of web design. It’s a place where the graphic designer, programmer, and project manager can all go to find helpful information.

The content is updated regularly and there’s always atleast a few hundred forum members online. If you have a question chances are it’s already been answered somewhere on SitePoint and if it hasn’t then the forum members are sure to answer it.

Recently my favorite place to hang out on SitePoint has been the SitePoint Marketplace. SitePoint describes the Marketplace as “a community trading place for web sites, domain names, web site templates and more.” The Marketplace has …
