Weekly Poll Added

I have a tendency to ask you the reader a lot of questions in my posts. Most recently I asked if you thought it would be beneficial for me to go to college or not. I’d like to make it a little easier for you to voice your opinion. I have my own thoughts and opinions about most of the posts I read but I don’t always have much to say. Now you don’t have to say anything. Just check the button you agree with and your done. You have no idea how helpful your comments have been so far and I’d like to help myself a little more by adding the poll.

It says weekly but it could be longer or shorter then a week depending on the response rates. By the way, I took the …

College?

At this months Refresh meeting Adrian talked a lot about college since he is the Technology Officer at ASU. Many of the guys there have been to college and gotten degrees in fields they don’t even work in. Others went to college for a few years and either quit or flunked out. My point is many people doing the things I want to be doing in the near future didn’t need a college degree to start doing the work they enjoy. I think most people looking for a web designer don’t care what kind of schooling the designer had, instead they would rather see what they can do. I don’t think many employers care if someone spent 4 years in college if someone else can do a better job.

When you pay for college what are you really paying for? …

Refresh Recap

So this months Refresh Phoenix meeting was yesterday and as usual, it was absolutely incredible! Adrian Sannier, the Technology Officer at ASU, spoke and did an incredible job. He is an amazing speaker and I loved listening to him. If you haven’t already you should check out his blog and podcast and you’ll see what I’m talking about. I continually talk about these meetings and I’m going to keep talking about them as long as they have the meetings. I learn so much just by listening in on conversations and I have trouble remembering everything. To help me remember the things I learn I write some of it down in my notebook but I don’t write everything so I’m going to post the things I learned and can remember from the meeting.

Designing Backwards

I finally got around to reading the 211th issue of A List Apart and I was really impressed with Derek Powazek’s article titled “Home Page Goals.” In the article he gives a list of 4 main goals that every home page has and how to accomplish them. These goals are extremely important in order to design sites that are user-friendly while effectively communicating who you are and what you do. Much of the information is common knowledge but it’s always nice to see it written and think “yeah, that make sense!” The part that I found the most interesting was at the very beginning. He says:

“When I set out to design a website, I do it backwards. I start with the design of the smallest, deepest element: the story page or search results. Then I work …

10 Things To Do in High School

I have 70 days of high school left (but who’s counting) and I’ve learned a lot from my years at Mountain View. I’m proud of my school and what I’ve accomplished there but I’m also very excited to move on to the “real world” (apparently the past 17 years don’t count). For anybody with more then a year of high school left, this is my list of things I have learned or things I wish I had done better in high school.

10. Always be on the lookout for scholarship opportunities. – Each year millions of dollars in scholarship money goes unused. Every student should be able to go to college if they want to and are willing to work for it. Scholarship money won’t come to you but often it isn’t hard to go to it. If …
