The Freelance Web Design Process

Lately I’ve been working on a design for a site that I plan on launching on March 1st. Initially I just wanted to get something on screen so I could have something to work with. The problem was, when I stepped back and looked at the site, I didn’t like what I saw. The goals of the site weren’t being addressed properly, the design wasn’t my best work, and the overall layout wasn’t going to work with the design and content I wanted in the site. This got me thinking about the steps I normally take when I build a new website. I quickly jotted down my design process from start to finish and I realized I had skipped a few vital steps.

1. The first step in the design process is to meet with the client. You need to get …

Spring 2006 CSS Reboot

To fulfill one of my goals for this year I need to redesign this site atleast 2 more times. The Spring 2006 CSS Reboot is a good excuse for me to create the next redesign.

“The CSS Reboot is a community event for web professionals. May 1st, 2006 at 6:00 GMT Rebooters from all over the world will launch their web standards-based redesigns simultaneously, bringing traffic, interest and a little respect to their sites. There are no prizes or arbitrary winners, just great exposure and the knowledge that we all participated in something great.”

The last Reboot was on November 1st, 2005, the same day this site was made live. Unfortunately I didn’t know about this cool event and I’m glad to have the opportunity to participate this time. This is a really cool and fun way to bring …

My Boring Name

I like my name but I’ve always thought it was pretty boring. I looked it up and found this from the Wikipedia entry for Matthew.

“Ever since 1975 the name Matthew has never dropped out of the top ten most popular names chosen for new-born babies in the United States, and every year since 1981 has remained among the top four — peaking at number two in both 1994 and 1996.”

In 1988, the year I was born, Matthew was the 3rd most popular baby name and Jones is currently the 4th most poplular last name in the U.S. At my high school I am 1 of 2 people named Matt Jones in my grade and I hate it because they always get stuff mixed up. In the 8th grade I went to his classes and he went to mine for an …

I Sleep In Class (Sometimes)

Don’t you hate it when you’re trying to stay awake in class but everything is just way too boring for you to even think about keeping your eyes open.

Yesterday I feel asleep while taking a test. Twice. The first time I did that head bobbing thing. I wasn’t falling over to the side. Instead, my head slowly sank closer and closer to the desk until my nose was about an inch away from the words on the paper in front of me. I finally came to and did that embarrassing twitch people make when they wake up too fast. The pencil in my limp hand had made a huge scribble across my answer sheet and I tried to work on the next question.

When I fell asleep the second time I only had a couple of questions left and I still …
